UN Days

Today I came to know that there is a “Global Hand Washing Day”! On the 15th of October 2008, children of South Asia are supposed to wash their hands with soap at the same time! Full story available at the Unicef site (http://www.unicef.org/media/media_45878.html).
Again, I came to know of this via an advertisement on television – that of “Lifebuoy” soaps :-). I was not aware also of the fact that this is the International Year of Sanitation! I am not sure of how these kind of special “Days” make a difference. There is a “World Mental Health Day (10th Oct)”, “International Day of Rural Women (15 thOct)”, “World Development Information Day (24th Oct)”, “International Day of Tolerance (16th Nov)”, “World Day or Remembrance of Road Traffic Victims (16th Nov)”.. the list is huge! Who would remember all these days – does it solve any purpose or they are made up to keep the people at UN just something to do? May be I should try to gather more information on what is the purpose solved by celebrating these days – and then I will have my “Got the meaning of – UN Special Days – Day” :-). Signing off now.
